Monaco Yacht Show Sets Clear Signs for New Markets

As always, the Yacht Show in Monaco had a lot to offer this year and the exhibitors spared no effort or creativity in the designing and presentation of the latest developments for the visitors. These few days are always special; exchanging information and discussing innovations in the yacht world in the impressive setting of Monaco.

One special feature has clearly emerged this year. The yacht world is preparing itself for a reorientation. The market for the construction of super yachts will continue to grow: Experts in the market expect that by 2019 up to 46 further yachts of over 70m will be built. As a consequent of this, the forecast is for an increase in the amount of refits of these yachts in the following years: At regular intervals there will be numerous servicing and refit projects.

According to Boatinternational.com, these new markets are also due to the remarkable number of yachts on sale: Approximately 850 yachts in total, 91 of which are longer than 50m. Sales in the yacht category 70m and longer are also expected to increase in the future. A change of ownership usually involves an extensive general overhaul and new outfitting. These projects can be equivalent to a new construction project with regards to the interior furnishing.

As you might expect, the topic refit is on everyone's lips and added a new dimension to this Monaco Yacht Show. For the first time this year, well-established and larger shipyards placed obvious additional emphasis on this market and some of them also had a separate point of contact in the Refit Exhibitors’ Area. It can also be seen that some shipyards are reserving and renting exclusive refit locations, e.g. on the Côte d’Azur, in order to be in direct contact with the responsible parties and to save high transfer costs to the main wharfs. We have also become aware of this activity in the refit field through various suppliers.

This development has not taken Deutsche Werkstätten by surprise. We have been looking at it for some time now and already taken action. Since 2011, this area has been managed by a professional team which has now been expanded to twelve employees who have established a comprehensive range of services. Today, we call the responsible department at Deutsche Werkstätten Client Liaison, this is logical as professional support for all the concerns of our customers and their yachts is paramount to us. We already have the capacity to plan and execute complex refit projects of the highest quality regardless of the ongoing yacht building process.
