For the exclusive presentation of ‘Johnnie Walker Blue Label Blended Scotch Whisky’, the Porsche Design Studio developed an equally exclusive bar unit whose technical design and construction was entrusted to Deutsche Werkstätten. The 2.22-metre-high and 320-kilogram pillar recalls the body of a bottle and even “unscrews” to open. The two sections turn through 90 degrees in opposite directions, while the larger lower section also moves downwards, revealing an illuminated bar with space for three bottles and four glasses. In addition, a refrigerated compartment containing an ice bucket, a carafe for water and four more glasses can be raised up via a button on the front. For the development Deutsche Werkstätten combined specialists from the areas of cooling technology, kinematics, control systems, LEDs, machined metal and leatherwork. After a development period of six months, the prototype was presented at Harrods in London in July 2011. Today 18 bar units grace the dwellings of whisky lovers all around the globe.
