Functionality in Classic Modernism

Riehmers Hofgarten, Berlin {hotel}

Deutsche Werkstätten services:
Interior design, planning, interior furnishing, outfitting of interiors with loose furniture

Completion 1997

[Riehmers Hofgarten, built in 1891, is an inviting green oasis amidst an ever-bustling Berlin Boulevard. With its charm and wonderfully personal attention, the hotel offers its guests an appealing alternative to the chain hotels. The new owner, the Konzentration GmbH company, is building upon the interplay between historical architecture, functional interior furnishings and contemporary art. The rooms, hallways and restaurant all proudly display original works of art from well-known artists as stimulating accent pieces. The equipment needed for the food and beverage service follows the overall design concept, which was formulated as a guideline for all buildings of the German SPD party by Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau together with Konzentration GmbH, the real estate and project development company of the SPD, Germany’s Social Democratic Party. The counter is Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau’s own design – similar to the installations in other SPD buildings in Rostock and Chemnitz. The bistro features seats designed by Philippe Starck combined with tables from Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau. Bold colours and discerning forms also characterise the design of the hotel rooms. Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau produced classic modern furniture of its own design for these rooms. Beds, desks, end tables, luggage racks and closets are made from Multiplex beech, which can clearly be seen at the narrow sides. Then they were given a Canadian maple veneer and clear varnish finishing.
