Burg Schlitz Castle, Hohen Demzin

Hotel room furnishings, interior décor

Completion 1999

Tucked into the rolling hills of the “Mecklenburger Schweiz”, nestled amidst a landscaped park, is Mecklenburg’s most distinctive time-honoured castle: Burg Schlitz. Guests lucky enough to stay at Burg Schlitz enjoy peace, quiet and comfort. A typical hotel ambience was vigilantly avoided. Guests will find no reception counter in the lobby, just a simple, straightforward desk. That a computer, indispensable in running a modern hotel, is hidden under a pane of glass escapes initial notice. The bustle of a conventional hotel lobby is unheard of at Burg Schlitz. The castle’s combination of antiques and custom-made furniture from Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau is an utter delight. From the towel rack in the bathroom to the inset closets, from the desk to the bar niche, Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau created an entire array of high-quality individual pieces of furniture for Burg Schlitz in French walnut, ash, ice birch and cherry woods. The castle’s lounge is situated in a circular room; the fixtures accommodate the shape of the room in snug lines. Display cases are built into niches on both sides of the back bar. The bar top combines walnut and polished copper with working surfaces of stainless steel. Special feature: the back-lit front serving to beautifully bring out the copper surfaces. Even the panelling behind the back bar is made of individual curved copper segments. Skilfully lit, they cast a pleasantly warm glow throughout the entire room.
Generously apportioned guest rooms, soaring, bright ceilings, noble interiors – the guests of Burg Schlitz can also look forward to comfort and serenity in one of 20 individually appointed hotel rooms. Working from the designs of architect Helmut Riemann, Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau created furniture to even further complement this extraordinary ambience. At Burg Schlitz, even though no two rooms are the same, the custom-made approach allowed the stylish accommodating of all essential functions. From the headboard to the make-up mirror, from the towel rack to the wooden Kleenex box, from the inset closet to the desk with its central leather insert, and from the handy stool in the bathroom to the dresser, Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau filled the Burg Schlitz castle hotel with creations of simple yet technically exquisite furniture.
