MARKING TIME 25 Years of Werkstättengalerie
25 years ago, the first exhibition was held at the Deutsche Werkstätten premises. 25 years later we were faced with the question of how we could celebrate the growth of the Werkstättengalerie from these first tender roots. We didn’t want a retrospective. And this would not have been possible both in terms of organisation and space. After all, there have been over 100 exhibitions in this time. Besides, although the past is a point of reference, we live entirely in the present and look to the future. For this reason, our 'anniversary exhibition‘ brings together artists who have displayed their work in the Werkstättengalerie over the past 25 years, but it presents new work and not pieces from the exhibitions at that time. It reflects the diversity of painting, sculpture, architecture and photography that we have been privileged to have at our venue over the years. In some cases, the ‘handwriting‘ can still be recognised, in others, the style has changed completely.
Time does not stand still and the selected works reflect the conflicting creative experience of artists' lives. The selection unites several generations, some artists have died in the meantime. The quality of their works stands for the quality of the exhibitions in our gallery over two and a half decades.
Without Colin Ardley, the curator, artist and exhibition designer, none of this would be possible. This time, too, he was responsible for the concept and exhibition design. The special occasion produced another highlight. We wanted to have a review of the last 25 years in front of us, in printed form and initiated a publication.
It not only highlights the recent past, but also focuses on the topic of 'exhibitions' over a wide span from the founding of the company to the present. The title KUNST GEWERBE RAUM (ART CRAFT SPACE) pinpoints the contents of this book.
