Kai Schiemenz: Splitters
Kai Schiemenz is a nomad. He moves about in the world of art as he does on the globe: from Australia to London, from Oderbruch to Berlin, from installations to graphics, from sculpture to painting. Here we have already determined an essential characteristic of his: he moves. This is not only meant physically, but also intellectually. This inner movement then finds its form in the work, possibly after a very winding way. There is generally an interaction with the possible viewer who is involved in the preparatory work of Schiemenz' art, in the reflection and research. His work is never an end in itself with no background. It seems almost inevitable that the artist ends up crossing borders. He is often found at interfaces. New and different seem to attract him. A very considered nomad who deliberates all theoretical and practical spaces and likes to exploit them. This is also clear from the scope of work which can be seen in the gallery at Deutsche Wertstätten. They are splitters of these diverse interactions, opening wide spaces for thought that invite the viewer to move as well - in the inner and outer space.
Kai Schiemenz was born in Erfurt in1966 and lives as a freelance artist in Berlin. From 1992 to 1998 he studied Fine Arts with Prof. Lothar Baumgarten at the University of Arts, Berlin and was awarded the 2000 Gasag Art Prize. He was also a scholarship holder from the Capital’s Culture Fund, the Villa Aurora in Los Angeles and the PS1 Residency Program, New York. Since the 90s he has exhibited internationally among others in the following contexts:
