Susanne Knaack: Beyond the gray

While evocative of photography, the paintings of Berlin artist Susanne Knaack are worlds apart. As much as first impressions might otherwise suggest, there are neither actual seascapes nor cloudscapes to serve as reference. The canvases come into being wholly on their own terms: The artist allows her colours to seek their own paths across her working plane, they flow in and out of each other with an occasional nudge, tilt, turn or jostle. The resulting compositions give rise to realms in which the abstract stirs very realistic associations. They evoke foaming tides, icy landscapes and distant skies. While controlled, the artist gives “free rein” to her material. She enters into a frank, highly emotionally charged dialogue during her artistic engagement. Which is not only seen but also felt. The path to the very limits of the world lies open before us.
