Werner Schellenberg: Signs and Allusions

Dresden painter and graphic designer Werner Schellenberg (b. 1943) has long been weaving his symbols and allusions through the national art scene wholly independent of political changes. He has also influenced the basic essence of the Workshop Gallery for years and significantly shaped its character. We have acknowledged this connection ever since 2003 when we first presented a show of his work in our Gallery. Many new pieces have since been created which are set to be introduced to the public in a new presentation. Although not just the new will be exhibited, a number of older works will also be included since a productive artist like Werner Schellenberg more readily reveals himself through the full context.
Schellenberg draws his allusions with every line he puts to white paper or any other canvas, which are far less painting surfaces than bare foundations. He is thereby a seeker. Taking in the material symbols and allusions of his search requires a certain emotional and cerebral investment from the viewer. And rewards the viewer by revealing battles, resolutions, uncertainties, joy and also rage. Some are expressive, some quite subtle beyond their initial exuberance. Others, carefully constructed, end up called into question or even destroyed by one simple line. Tensions arise and elusive image surfaces transform into the explicable. The surfaces have depth and appear as layered sediments of colour. Dark at first, they begin to illumine in light. There are also the almost lyrical, frenzied illustrations which unexpectedly utilise the figurative as a means of expression. Werner Schellenberg’s illustrations are calls to join in – in seeing as well as thinking. He is always good for a surprise.
As curator Colin Ardley recently said: “Werner is one of the country’s most exciting artists.” We agree and are therefore delighted to be able to invite you to this new exhibition.
